I Grew 10k+ Subscribers on YouTube in 7 Days. Here’s What I Learned.
The good and the bad of all the A/B tests I've been doing.
The “secret” to do it? Not a secret, it’s a formula called Marketing+Curiosity+Putting Skin In The Game.
I decided to give a go on the Promotions tab on YouTube to see what would happen.
My strategy was simple: I checked the view that had the most subscribers per view (i.e., what’s the video that would give me the best chance of getting subscribers if I pushed it.
It was the “I Cloned My Brain” one.
Well…. It went well and I decided to run with another couple of videos.
Now… What Lessons did I learn?
1. A lot of my audience came from India, which means the cost per view there is cheap.
2. Most of these accounts DID NOT engage with my video.
3. The numbers DO count towards my monetization numbers
4. YouTube is UNDERCOUNTING the results. If I add up the “promotion subscribers”, I got 6894 subscribers. However, I really got over 12k. I think this is a glitch in the sense that it only counts people who watch the video and hit subscribe under that video, not the ones that go to my channel after watching the video and then subscribe from there.
5. Is this gonna kill my numbers? Doesn’t seem like it, the videos that I posted after seem to be doing exactly like the previous ones. In fact, I had a short that did extremely well for my numbers.
6. Will I do this again? Probably not. I’m trying to build a community so I want engagement.
7. Do I think it was worth it? Yes. People look at an account with 10k+ a lot different from an account that has 144 subscribers.
8. Worth the $300 dollars? Yes. You can’t learn if you don’t put skin in the game.

Hi, if you’re reading this part, this little “journal” is part of my “Unsunk Newsletter” where I share the best and the worst things about quitting my job in finance to become a full-time entrepreneur running a video production agency.
You can sign up for the actual newsletter here, and I’ll certainly let you know if substack takes over my other platform (currently Kajabi).
